Ways to Volunteer
Groups are always needed to provide dinner for the families staying at Ronald McDonald House. Please call 806-744-8877 to schedule a date.
Computers – This position requires a volunteer to commit to one or more scheduled three-hour shifts per week and would also require additional training. We train volunteers in data entry.
Decorating Committee - This committee focuses on decorating and clean up of the House and Family Rooms for the different holidays. This position will allow your creativity to come through and offers a very flexible volunteer schedule.
Fundraisers and Special Events- These people assist with the various fundraisers and events of RMHC. A variety of opportunities exist. We need volunteers who can recruit volunteers for the events, help plan the events, work at the events, etc. In the past we have done a Volunteer Appreciation banquet (Spring), fundraising galas, various holiday parties, Corndog Booth at the South Plains Fair (Fall), and the list goes on.
Gardening – You don’t necessarily need to have a green thumb to help out in this area – you just need to have a love and appreciation for plants! Volunteers will be planting flowers in the front entrance area of the main House, watering and maintaining household plants, gardening, and environmental beautification (picking up trash!). This is a perfect opportunity for groups who would like to volunteer on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis.
Handy Person – Are you a Mr. or Ms. Fix-It? Then we need you! Volunteers are asked to do light house maintenance. This could be anything from changing light bulbs to fixing a loose cabinet hinge. Volunteers are able to come weekly, or as maintenance and repairs are required.
Receptionist / Office Assistant - These are volunteers who commit to one or more scheduled three-hour shifts per week. Some of the duties of a receptionist are to answer phones, the door, light housekeeping when needed, inventory rooms of families checking out of the House, and giving tours. Depending on the volunteer’s interests and the needs of the House, other duties will also be requested of these volunteers. Volunteers who cannot commit to a weekly schedule can sign up as a substitute receptionist. Receptionists are selected by staff following an interview with an interested volunteer.
Van Drivers- The Ronald McDonald House has two donated vans which are used for transporting families to/from the hospital, going to pick up supplies, taking families for scheduled trips to Wal-Mart or a grocery store, etc. Van Drivers sign up for scheduled shifts and/or let us know when they are available for on-call needs or to serve as a substitute for the scheduled driver. You must be 21 years or older and have a good driving record.
Visit Hospitals – If you would like to bring a smile to a child’s face, then this is the job for you. We coordinate with each of the children’s hospitals to do fun and interactive activities with the sick children. This volunteer opportunity requires a flexible schedule and an open heart.
Volunteer Mentors- These volunteers are those who are very familiar with the duties of a particular aspect of the House and Family Rooms (ex. House Warmer or Meal Committee Member) and who are willing to train new volunteers and offer the new volunteers a chance to “shadow” a more experienced volunteer.
Volunteer at the Family Rooms – In the summer of 2006, Ronald McDonald House Charities opened Family Rooms inside three hospitals (Covenant Lakeside, Lubbock, Texas; UMC, Lubbock, Texas; Medical Center, Odessa, Texas). Family Rooms are mini Ronald McDonald Houses and offer all families (local and out-of-town) the opportunity to take a break from the stressful hospital environment. Families are encouraged to come to the Family Rooms and enjoy a warm, comfortable setting in which they can relax and get something to eat or drink. Volunteers are required to commit to regular volunteer schedule and incur additional training. This opportunity does require the volunteer to step up. Our Family Rooms are staffed 100% by our volunteers. When a shift is not covered, then we are forced to close the doors, thus denying families the services we provide.
Volunteer with the Care Mobile – These friendly faces will help meet and greet children and their families at health fairs, etc. Other opportunities may also be available.
Of course, you could primarily do mainly one of these jobs or sample all of them until you found what makes you happiest. If you don’t see a job on here that appeals to your desires then come talk to us in the office and we can find something that best utilizes your talents.
