Hospital Family Room Volunteer

Have you ever cared for a loved one in the hospital? If so, you are familiar with the worry, anxiety and exhaustion that often occur during this stressful time. After long hours of attentively hovering by a child’s side, a tired and overwhelmed family is often at a loss when it comes to taking care of their own basic needs. This is where YOU can help!
Are you a friendly, outgoing and mature person who would enjoy hosting our Ronald McDonald Family Room? We need you!
Ronald McDonald Family Rooms® are like "mini" Ronald McDonald Houses right inside the hospital. Our Lubbock Family Rooms are located inside University Medical Center and Covenant Women's and Children's Hospitals. Our Odessa Family Room is located inside Medical Center Hospital. Families who have a hospitalized child use the rooms to eat, shower, access the computer, wash laundry, rest and reflect. This helps them to balance and sustain themselves, so they can then offer undivided attention and nurturing to their healing child.
Family Room Volunteers greet incoming families, give them a tour, bake cookies and make coffee, keep the room tidy and generally provide companionship to the families visiting the room. This is a wonderful opportunity for college students, couples, work-at-home parents, and retirees.
Individuals and small groups are welcome! Volunteer alone, or join with a friend. You can also invite your church group, social group, neighbors, Greek or professional organization to rotate and cover a weekly shift together!
Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 or older, attend orientation and training, pass a background check ($5 dollar fee for the background check), and take a TB test (provided at no charge) in order to serve in the hospitals. Due to training and expenses, a minimum commitment of a semester is required.
